Artist Statement
Creating as an emerging artist is such fun, I am enjoying exploring various techniques while developing my unique style. I am inspired by a variety of styles including posterized images by Andy Warhol, textured surfaces by the Impressionists, vibrant colours by Vladimir Tretchikoff, and intricate details by Khide Wiley. My diverse backgrounds influence the subject matter of my art. My African side is drawn to East and West African symbols, textiles and religion. My Jamaican side is influenced by Caribbean culture, dance, and people. Canadian Black history is another source of influence. I am also a nature lover and enjoy sitting and sketching outdoors. The purpose of my art is to satisfy my creative curiosity. I love being present as I create artwork and pay attention to the details of colour, form, and space. I enjoy the stories that I learn about people, history, culture and experience as I research my subjects. I am grateful to my fellow local artists, teachers and friends who inspire and support me along the way.
