“Themarypotter” is a small batch potter of functional and decorative ceramics. What began as a hobby in 1993, while living in Hong Kong, has now grown into a more intentional and inspired production of her pottery after returning to Canada. She creates mostly one-of-kind pieces in her home studio. Her inspiration comes from attending workshops, including one in Korea, on various decorating techniques. A favourite is focused on raku, a firing process which has become her favourite technique. Works by “themarypotter” can be found at different shows hosted by pottery guilds throughout the year.
I am Mary Goh, the ceramicist behind “themarypotter”. Despite being a small batch potter, I strive to create mostly one-of-a-kind functional or decorative pieces. In my journey as a potter, I have taken numerous workshops especially on decorating techniques. My inspirations for surface decorations come from nature, and you’ll often see that on my pottery, either painted, carved, pierced or sculpted. A technique that intrigues me the most is Raku. This is a unique firing process that results in the most beautiful ceramic pieces. I hope to expand this technique and explore more atmospheric firings in the future.
