Arriving in Canada in 1997, Sjon de Groot was employed in the pharmaceutical sector for many years, until he made the choice to devote himself fully to pursuing his life-long dream of just being an artist. Originally trained by Geoffrey and Michael Armstrong at the Johannesburg School of Art in South Africa, Sjon de Groot completed many commissions for business and private collectors before emigrating to Canada in 1997. Sjon comes from a long line of Dutch artists.
Principally working in oil for his landscapes, he also experiments in ethereal mask-making, and the occasional watercolour. The work is bold and multi-dimensional, reflecting the tension of an expression of Canada by an African as he seeks colour and meaning in the landscape of his adopted home. Since arriving in Canada, de Groot has participated in several exhibitions in and about the GTA.
